About NBHSW - The tests

The tests

The automated otoacoustic emissions (AOAE) is the primary test used for well babies. However, it is not always possible to get a clear response within the first 24 hours and in these cases the Service Model recommends that if the mother is expected to be discharged within 24 hours, the baby's hearing is screened again using a different method, the automated auditory brainstem response (AABR). This is to reduce the number of babies leaving hospital requiring follow up. If it is not possible to undertake AABR e.g. if baby becomes unsettled, then a further AOAE screen may be offered in the community either at home or in a local clinic.

Babies at high risk are screened using AABR as the primary test. High risk babies are babies who have spent more than 48 hours in a Special Care Baby Unit/Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
