Screening Link Person (SLP) Communication Pathway

What is it?

Screening Services in conjunction with Local Health Boards and GP practices developed a Screening Link Person communication pathway to share information more effectively and efficiently. The development was introduced across Wales and adopted by most GP Practices. The development is now extending to other clinical areas such as Community Clinics and Hospitals.

Who is the SLP?

The Screening Link Person is a practice/clinic nominated member of staff and can be a GP, nurse or an administrative person. If a SLP is an administrative staff member, a clinical support is also nominated.

How does the SLP communication pathway operate?

  • Prior to sending information out to practices a ‘shot email’ is sent to inform them of impending information.
  • Information is sent to the Screening Link Person.
  • Information should then be disseminated to all appropriate staff.
  • A Feedback pathway to screening services is available.

SLP pathway modes of communication

  • Important circular documents will continue to be distributed in a paper format.
  • SLP resource website containing Cervical and Breast Screening information, helpful links and contact details.
  • SLP website ‘Noticeboard’ with:
    • A Bulletin Board to transmit current and helpful information. The SLP for the practice/clinical area checks the CSW and BTW site once a month for messages and then circulates to appropriate staff.
    • News/letters containing copies of any recent important circular letters. The facility will allow practices to circulate information electronically, if required. There are also links to copies of CSW and BTW Newsletters.

The SLP website is available to health professionals and administrative staff. Details of how to access the site is available from the SLP in the practice/clinic.

Other areas of SLP responsibilities

  • Responsible for the upkeep of Smear Taker Guides in the practice/clinic.
  • The SLP to inform Cervical Screening Wales when smear takers join or leave the practice/clinical area, aiding effective distribution of Smear Taker Reports.
  • Raise awareness of screening administrative procedures in the practice.

If you have any queries regarding the SLP please contact your local Nurse Co-ordinator.
