About Screening

Information Leaflets - Screening women with breast implants

If you have a breast implant, you may be unsure whether or not screening is suitable for you. You may find the following information useful.

It is technically more difficult for the radiographer to screen you. We may arrange for you to have your mammogram at the static centre, where the radiographer can check the quality of your films at the time.

The breast tissue is already under some pressure from the implant so she will only apply light compression while taking the mammogram. This is unlikely to damage the implant.

As stated in your invitation leaflet, screening like most tests, is not 100% accurate and does not prevent cancer. In addition, the implant is dense and will hide some breast tissue.

It is particularly important that you continue to look out for any changes in your breasts. Do not hesitate to see your family doctor should you find anything unusual.
